Our experiences with burnout have shaped and influenced every page of our book. “The Culture of Burnout” is out now in paperback and on Kindle. We knew we wanted to be honest about how burnout has impacted our lives as workers and women.
We would not have written this book if it wasn’t for Kristen’s experiences with burnout in the last year and a half. There are a lot of reasons for why her work ethic drives her to exhaustion and she details them in several parts of the book.
I (Erin) have come very close to caregiver burnout in the last two years. It was extremely important for me to be honest about how that has changed how I work and live.
We also wanted to share our experiences with burnout so that we could talk about the practices we have developed that have helped improve our well-being. We both fell victim to the Wellness Industrial Complex, which tells everyone that they are a bad person if they are unwell. It has taken us a lot of work to unlearn those thought patterns, and get to a place where we are willing to accept that our wellness journey’s are very different from lots of folks.
So many people have experienced burnout because we have a culture of burnout in America. We value productivity over rest, and we place moral value judgments on a person’s ability to appear “well.”
The good news is, we don’t have to live this way. We’ve started our journey and we hope that through our book you join us too!
